PATIENT SAFETY ORGANIZATION [PSO]

PSO’s are organizations that share the goal of improving the quality and safety of healthcare delivery.

Organizations that are eligible to become PSO’s include: public or private entities, profit or non-profit entities, provider entities such as hospitals, nursing homes, and other entities.

By providing both privilege and confidentiality, PSO’s create a secure environment where clinicians and healthcare organizations can collect, aggregate, and analyze data, thereby improving quality by identifying and reducing the risks and hazards associated with patient care.

QUESTIONS? WE HAVE ANSWERS

HIPSO utilizes a web-based, state-of-the-art software program for reporting patient safety events.

A Patient Safety Event Form can be immediately initiated by any person of the member organization upon discovery of an incident, near miss, or unsafe condition.

HIPSO generates quarterly reports with trending and analysis for all members.

Members may utilize the data to generate internal reports for use in Quality, Patient Safety, and Performance Improvement activities, including benchmarking.

PATIENT SAFETY IS THE FUTURE

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 calls for states to create Health Insurance Exchanges [HIE’s], which must be operational by January 2014.

By January 2015, qualified health plans in insurance exchanges may not contract with a hospital of fifty [50] beds or more unless that hospital has a Patient Safety Evaluation system and reports data to a PSO.
